Welcome to the Ultimate Treehouse and Playground
Design and Construction Website!
When we haven’t been building Treehouses and Playgrounds over the past year and half, we’ve been gathering, organizing and optimizing hundreds of digital photos and old prints, plodding through html, and inevitable computer glitches. Now, finally, we welcome you to Website v.2! We are currently working on adding new FAQs, additional Photo Gallery pages, and more. As of March, 2005, our site consists of approximately 12000 lines of code in 250 pages, 500 unique photos in two sizes (not including thumbnails), and 100 graphic images.
The current website and all of the current graphics and logos have been lovingly collected, hand-coded, and tweaked by Go Out and Play crew-mon, Kirk Schmidt, late at night, on the weekends and during nasty weather. After years of Print and Digital Design and Website Programming, Kirk joined up with his friends Art and Kelley and learned a thing or two about creative carpentry any many more universal subjects.
Programming Details
The Go Out and Play website consists of table-less Transitional HTML pages with server-side Header and Footer Includes to simplify page and site design. We also utilize Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for all of our screen and printing layouts and styles. Although we originally used server side script to parse out browser-optimized CSS, we have ultimately decided to use consistent style sheets. This may result in some viewing problems in older internet browsers such as Netscape (Mozilla) versions 4.x and Internet Explorer versions 4.5 and earlier. Taking advantage of newer programming techniques and standards is just one of many decisions and compromises to be made during the process of designing and programming a website. Our primary goal is to provide a site that serves not only the typical viewer, but also accounts for the disabled viewer, the programming community, and the makers and distributors of web browsing applications. To this end, we attempt to follow HTML, CSS and WAI/Section 508 programming standards as established by the W3C World Wide Web Consortium. Due to the extremely large quantity of gallery photos, we have not provided alt tags within the photo gallery; however, we have captions underneath each photo.
Up and Coming
Website V.3, the "website of the future" will utilize a PHP/MySQL database to expand and simplify gallery browsing. The database will also enable access to our entire portfolio (much larger than our current Photo Gallery), a site search engine, relative linking, alt tags within our gallery, a feature slide show and more. We may also change the primary programming from transitional HTML to XML. Eventually when internet browsers consistently adopt CSS2 and XSL standards, we’ll employ more intricate and complex styles to really make the site jump.
Other Credits
Most of the early photos were taken by Art Scherer and Kelley Kirven and most of the recent photos were taken by Kirk Schmidt. A handful of other folks throughout the years developed the original website and graphics and hopefully I can track them down to give them their due.
